About this item

Identifier

Description

Bessie The steamer Bessie at Hayle, moored by East Quay with South Quay in the background. The Bessie was built in Hayle by Harveys in 1865, and regularly crossed between Hayle, Bristol and South Wales, carrying coal. Harveys built her with a boiler and screw propeller, but also with 3 fore-and-aft rigged masts as per a schooner. In this photo she rides quite high out of the water and is probably unladen.
