The ladies race during the World Pilot Gig Championships held on the Isles of Scilly. Among those pictured are Fowey Club’s Cornish Pilot Gig ‘Rival’ built in 1989 by Ralph Bird of Devoran; Truro's 'Royal' built in 1988 also by Ralph Bird; Newquay Club's 'Speculation' built by Tom Chudleigh of St Mary's in 1987 and named after a historic Newquay fish cellar; St Mary's (IOS) Club’s 'Islander' built in 1989 by Tom Chudleigh of St Mary's and Roseland’s ‘William Peters’ built in 1987 again by Ralph Bird and named after the renowned Cornish Pilot Gig builder William Peters of St Mawes.
