Description
An account of the resource
The Gibson Collection brings together images taken during the World Pilot Gig Championships held on the Isles of Scilly each May. The World Pilot Gig Championships was first held in 1990 when a fleet of 19 gigs competed. There are now more than 100 gigs that take to the water for a weekend of racing. The collection provides a valuable record showing the growth and popularity of the sport.
The Gibson family are five generations of photographers who started recording life on Scilly in the 1860’s. John Gibson began the family business when he bought his first camera abroad to use on the islands and successive generations of the family have continued what he started, building up a unique photographic history of day-to-day life on Scilly.
Frank Gibson recorded the very first World Pilot Gig Championships event in Scilly and continued each year as the event grew. In latter years his daughter, Sandra Kyne took over.
