Description

The first powered flight in Cornwall, made by aviator Claude Grahame-White at Poniou Farm, Long Rock, near Penzance.On 23 July 1910 the British Home, Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets were anchored in Mounts Bay and Grahame-White wanted to drop imitation bombs on the ships to alert the government to the possibility of attacks from the air. His Farman biplane was brought to a field at Poniou Farm, Long Rock, but he could not carry out his 'raid' because of adverse weather. He was later that evening able to take off and make the flight over Mounts Bay.
