Clive Carter Collection (1888 Items)

Schooner Cornish Lass, Trevellas, 1896The Carter Collection is arguably Cornwall’s pre-eminent photographic record of shipping and ship wrecks.

Clive Carter was perhaps best known for his many publications on Cornish themes, in particular shipping and shipwrecks. Clive amassed a prestigious photographic collection of salvage, wartime activity, rescue, lifeboats, fishing, ports and harbours, spanning over 100 years of Cornish history.

The collection features locations around the Cornish coast, from Bude to Penzance and on to Polperro, taking in the Isles of Scilly on the way. There are even photographs of ships in such far-flung places as Devon.

Clive’s collection was bequeathed to the Cornish Studies Library and many of the photographs from the collection are presented online here for the very first time.

Some of these images can also be viewed by browsing the images available through the statutory archive kresenkernow.org. Enquiries regarding viewing the images or acquiring copies can be made to Kresen Kernow via telephone: 01209 614430 or email: kresenkernow@cornwall.gov.uk .
