Description
Cornish Pilot Gigs on the harbour beach at Newquay. Among those pictured are ‘Newquay’ built in 1812, the oldest known Cornish Pilot Gig, ‘Dove’ built c1830, ‘Treffry’ built in 1838 all by the Peters family of St Mawes, ‘Active’ built in 1973 by Tom Chudleigh of St Mary’s, 'Good Intent' built in 1974 also by Tom Chudleigh and named after a historic Newquay fish cellar, ‘Fly’ built in 1993 and 'Hope' built in 2000 both by Ralph Bird of Devoran and named after a historic fish cellars in Newquay. All modern Cornish Pilot Gigs are based on the ‘Treffry’.
