Description
George Northey from Newquay Rowing Club who was instrumental in the revival of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing, going to the Isles of Scilly to purchase various Gigs built by the renowned Peters family of St Mawes. He was very much involved with the early popularity of the sport and the survival of the early Gig boats. Pictured here on board Cornish Pilot Gig ‘Slippen’ under sail, built in 1830 by the Peters family of St Mawes for St Martins on the Isles of Scilly and originally known as 'Bernice', the name being changed when she was sold to St Agnes. In 1907 she was used in the rescue of the American schooner, ‘Thomas W Lawson’ and In 1925 she was involved in the rescue of 26 people from the wreck of 'Cite de Verdun'. In 1953 she was purchased by Newquay Club but loaned back to to them in 1963 and later sold back to the Islands.
