Description

David George interviews Chris Hitchings of Roseland Gig Club at the Newquay Cornish Pilot Gig Championships in September 2018. David asks him how his interest in Gig rowing started and Chris explains that it was through a model of the Cornish Pilot Gig ‘Bonnet’ made by Frank Peters of Freshwater Boat Yard, a direct descendant of the 19th Century family of Gig Builders. The model was kept in the Rising Sun Inn and even as a young boy Chris admired it. He talks about establishing a gig club at St Mawes, the support they had from several other clubs and having the gig ‘William Peters’ built by Ralph Bird. He says that he was at the inaugral meeting of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association at the Royal Hotel in Truro attended by members of various clubs.
