Description

The Lizzie Wilce carrying anthracite (a form of coal) from Swansea to St Malo, but in a N gale, had trouble in a tacking manoeuvre and struck the Crab Rock at the north end of Porthminster beach. After this, the ship grounded on Porthminster beach. The St Ives lifeboat James Stevens No 10 rescued Captain Bates and all his crew. The Lizzie Wilce survived and was refloated, but was so badly damaged that she resumed work as a coal hulk (a floating store).
