Description
Ted Gundry explores the events of Arnhem and operation 'Market Garden' with contributions from those who participated in the event including: Jack Edwards, Alf Wharton, Don Smith, Ken Fleet, Martin Herford, Tony Hibbert and Tom Bawden. Major Tony Hibbert officer i/c Brigade H.Q. explains the reasons for the delays in the operation and the problems they had to face. Glider Pilot Sam Turner of St. Columb, explains the problems presented by the operation. Paratrooper Jack Edwards describes the opposition they faced and the loss of two brothers from Tregajorran. Jack Edwards, 6 Platoon, explains how they discovered a German machine gun post in the same building they had occupied by the bridge. Don Smith gives another view of the battle for the bridge from 4 Platoon. Tom Bawden of Mabe takes up the story. Martin Herford, non-combatant, i/c of medical supplies describes making contact with the Germans. Bren gunner Ken Fleet, who joined the battle on the second day, was eventually wounded and taken prisoner. It is explained that after holding the bridge for three days, by 20th September things had become desperate and plans were laid to extract the survivors from the battler area. Major Hibbert describes making contact with the local resistance, and explains how aided by the Dutch, they managed the escape of 135 service personnel all armed and in uniform which proved to be the largest mass escape of the Second World War.
