Helston County Secondary School (65 Items)

The Helston County Secondary School collection was created as part of the 'Green School Revisited' project. The collection includes photographs and oral history recordings featuring the memories of pupils and teachers. The project was led by the Cornubian Arts & Science Trust (CAST) and supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with Feast, Helston Town Council and Cornwall Councillor Community Chest contributions.

Helston County Secondary School was housed in the former School of Science and Art given to the town of Helston by the philanthropist John Passmore Edwards in 1897, with extensions built in 1905 and 1913  in the same architectural style and using the same building materials. In the sixties and early seventies it was known locally as the ‘Green School’ because of its uniform of dark green and grey. The school closed in 1972 with the introduction of comprehensive education in Helston.

The former school building is now owned by CAST, an educational charity that aims to create opportunities for people of all ages to experience ground-breaking cultural activity. The building is home to artists studios, a café and a programme of public events and activities.
