Description
David George interviews John Bennetts at the Newquay County Gig Championships in September 2018. He tells David that as a child he used to row the ferries on the River Gannel and later when Newquay Rowing Club was reformed he tried to row in as many races as possible. He explains that in the early days gigs were transported by John Julian and later Rickard’s furniture vans, with the back doors open and the gig hanging out of the back. David asks him about the gigs which were brought over from the Isles of Scilly by George Northey and Dick Gillis among others and he says that they were in a pretty poor state and were taken to Brabyn’s yard in Padstow for repair. At that time his friend ‘Dasher’, Peter Reveley, was an apprentice but has since gone on to build several gigs, including one for Padstow Rowing Club named ‘Dasher’ after him. He was involved in the filming of the original television series of ‘Poldark’ which he says was good fun even though every scene had to be shot several times.
