Description

David George interviews John Bawden at the Newquay Cornish Pilot Gig Championships in September 2018. He is the Commodore of Newquay Rowing Club and Chairman of the Trustees of their Gigs. David says that as John had been a member of the Club since the early 1950s he would remember the Gigs that were brought over from the Isles of Scilly which John confirms, telling of how they were sent to Brabyn’s yard in Padstow for repair. Money for this was raised from many sources and some of the timber needed was supplied by the Moreland Match Company. He says that the sport is now much more serious than when he started, the crews having to train hard and watch their diets. In his day after a race they went to a pub for a beer and a song.
