Description

David George interviews Mike Peters of Truro River Rowing Club at the Newquay Cornish Pilot Gig Championships in September 2018. David asks him how he started in gig rowing and Mike explains that although he had always known about them (he is descended from the Peters family of Polvarth near St Mawes who were renowned 19th Century Gig builders) he had never taken up the sport. However in 1991 he met Ralph Bird’s son John in London who was wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with ‘Shah built by Nicholas Peters 1873’ and thought that as a descendant he should learn to row. He phoned Ralph who put him in touch with Dave Pearce of Truro Rowing Club and he joined them and has been with them ever since. He says that he really enjoys sailing in Gigs which is big part of their history.
