Description

David George interviews Patrick Clive ‘Spider’ Stephens at the Newquay Cornish Pilot Gig Championships in September 2018. He asks him how he obtained his nickname and Spider explains that all the youngsters in his day were given ridiculous names and that his has stuck for ever. David asks him how he got involved with gig rowing and he says that he was brought up around the harbour and gig rowing was always a tradition. David asks about lady rowers and Spider tells him that until 1975 the Gig Trustees would not allow any as they thought they would damage the boats! Once the ladies started to win races the Trustees had a change of heart.
