Description

Steamships Bessie & Vulture On 17 November 1893, the steamer Bessie ran aground at Carbis Bay not the first time she had made landfall unintentionally, but this time she was wrecked in a gale which also destroyed 4 other ships near St Ives. Bessie's crew were rescued by Breeches-buoy, pulled by the coastguard rocket team from the deck to the cliff. The steamer Vulture, of Cardiff, also ran aground near Bessie though she was wrecked, her crew were saved.
